The whole is definitely greater than the sum of its parts.
If you listen to one track individually, it usually doesn't sound very good. But, when blended with others, the result is beautiful.

We all have different gifts.Some can sing "oohs" really well, others are better at singing words. Some can maintain breath support through long phrases, while others cannot. Some are good for singing solos, others are better at singing the supporting parts.

Re-takes and punch-ins are a wonderful thing.I've only come across one take from beginning to end of a song that I've used without editing. That's one person on one song, in the context of 9+ people on 13 songs.
