Conservation Mode

The water main to the Coffman Ranch broke at some point overnight. So, we woke up to no water service this morning.

I am happy to tell you that I was able to sponge bathe, wash my hair, brush my teeth, and complete every other task necessary to get ready for the day while using only about 2/3 of a 16 oz. bottle of water.

That inspires me to try to conserve more water even during the times that we have ample water supply. It also reminds me of those who don't have safe drinking water throughout the world.

To be fair, this isn't a totally new revelation for me. For the past few years I have tried to be more conscientious about my usage. For example, I grew up letting the water run while I brushed my teeth, and I have since worked to adjust that behavior.

There is something to be said for being smart users of the earth's resources rather than being wasteful just because they are in good supply in our area of the world.

Do you guys do anything special to conserve resources?

2 years ago, we started collecting newpapers. Now...we don't even take or buy the paper. But the schools here get money if you put paper into their recycle bins on their property. SOOO....the kids came home saying the school was having a paper drive. We went to several of the neighbors and asked if we could get them to save their daily paper for us. Now...once a week we come home to find loads of paper bagged up on our porch. THAT WAS 2 YEARS AGO!!! So not only are we recycling...but we are giving back to the school as well.

Sorry to hear about your water problem. I hope ya'll get it fixed soon. It amazed me though how you managed to do all that with just 16oz. of water. It opens my eyes to how much water I really use. I don't have an exciting story like yours or Brenda's, but our family recycles cans...ever since fourth grade actually, because my teacher always had us do that as a class all year and it kinda stuck. Also, we recycle paper and take it to our school bins. The school in turn gets money for it and we are giving back to the environment.

We recycled newspapers, glass and plastic at the house in Edmond. Owasso hasn't had such a handy system since we've moved here. That's certainly one area where they could improve.

Maybe I should save my newspapers for you, Brenda.

You know...even better, you could help Linbergh Elementary out if they have a recycle bin on their property. If they do, we could recycle paper from the church and take it over their so it could help fund their school. Just a thought.

I thought I left a comment here the other day... But I was multitasking and probably never hit the submit button.

We are *finally* going to switch to a waste disposal company that offers recycling-our current one does not.

I do my best to buy local and organic where possible to try and reduce our carbon foot print. I try to take 5 minute showers compared to the 25 minute ones the husband takes to try to conserve water. I haven't been able to turn the faucet off while brushing my teeth, it's a hard habit to break.

reusable menstrual products- better for me, better for the environment because I'm not contributing as much waste and products full of chemicals into the landfill. I made the switch about a year ago, and it's probably one of the best decisions I've made. Sorry if that was too much info about me... but you do read my blog so you have probably already seen it on there... lol

To clean a body your size with a small bottle of water has to be a miracle. You know, kind of like the widow's oil that never ran out!

I'm very impressed. :)
