Deceiving!

If you're like me, you always purchase the least expensive version of gasoline when you're at the pump. My car's user manual gives me permission, although I would probably do it regardless. I've never been able to tell a difference in performance on those few occasions I have purchased the upgrade.

I can remember my grandparents being convinced that the only difference is that they put coloring in the more expensive version...

For years and years, the least expensive gasoline has always been the one on the left. Either the pump on the left or the push button on the left. The one on the right has always been the premium gasoline.

However, now I'm starting to notice gas stations put the least expensive gasoline on the right. I wonder how many people they're fooling into purchasing the more expensive version? How many people, on autopilot, instinctively reach for the pump or button on the left? Do you?

I'm convinced this change is in hopes of people making a mistake, therefore tricking us out of more money.

On another note, in a conversation over the holidays I learned something about one of the national oil change companies (to remain nameless). It is not enough for them to simply change your oil for $24.95. Their employees are expected to make that trip cost you a minimum of $50.

This goes beyond the "would you like fries with that?" concept. They are literally keeping track of each employees' average customer cost, and if they do not meet expectations they are subject to dismissal.

No wonder everytime I go they tell me my air filter is bad or my wipers need to be replaced (even though they just did it last time!).

--------------------------------------

Then the LORD God said to the woman, "What is this you have done?" The woman said, "The serpent deceived me, and I ate." (Gen 3:13)

Esau said, "Isn't he rightly named Jacob ? He has deceived me these two times: He took my birthright, and now he's taken my blessing!" (Gen 27:36)

When morning came, there was Leah! So Jacob said to Laban, "What is this you have done to me? I served you for Rachel, didn't I? Why have you deceived me?" (Gen 29:25)

He replied: "Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am he,' and, 'The time is near.' Do not follow them. (Luke 21:8)

But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent's cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ. (2 Cor 11:3)

Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. (Gal 6:7)

At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. (Titus 3:3)

You know....I never paid attention. Guess I will from now on!
I'll think of you everytime I get gas!

I just want to clear the air and remind everyone that Brenda means when she gets gasoline.

That's right, clearing the air.

Gasoline.

No confusion here, all right?

Clear the air? That's funny!

It saddens me that "truth" in advertising has somehow evolved into "distortion of the truth" not only in advertising, but in so many areas of our society today. It should be no surprise since the master of deception set the stage in the Garden of Eden when he asked Eve, "Did God really say, 'You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?" Satan used a distortion of the truth to cast enough doubt into Eve to begin questioning the wisdom and faithfulness of God. As a result the first division of God’s people occurred. He does it us all the time. “Did God really say…” We begin to doubt what God says in His word and try to explain what we think He meant by it and so the division begins. The seed of doubt is planted and we begin to look for reasons to exclude brothers and sisters in Christ because they view it a little differently than we do. Deception – distortion – division – it’s work since the beginning of time. May we not give Satan the satisfaction! My prayer is this: May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give us a spirit of unity among ourselves as we follow Christ Jesus, so that with one heart and mouth we may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. (Rom. 15:5) Finally, [may] all of us live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble. (1 Peter 3:8)

I've actually started pumping the high octane before, doing exactly what you described, Shane. It irritated me that they had done the old switch-a-roo, so I stopped pumping (I think I had put in a couple dollars worth before I noticed.) I finished that transaction then started over with the lower octane stuff.

While it bothered me that I didn't even notice, I actually thought it was clever of somebody to figure that they could probably get a few extra bucks simply by that change. I think it says something about how often we act out of habit and not intentional thought. Does that ever happen at church? .............. Nah!

Gary -

I probably would have been irritated enough to have stopped and driven to the next gas station to finish my fueling.

If I weren't equally lazy...
